When I was 5 years old, my parents bought a house in Eastham. A year later, they purchased Homer Smith’s Cottages which were on Depot Pond. They renamed them to Gibson Cottages and I spent summers in Eastham working at the cottages, pumping gas, and working as a summer police officer for the Eastham Police Department. I have fond memories of the bombing of the target ship, seeing the light from Nauset Light, and spending days at Coast Guard beach. I remember a train going along the old railroad tracks, although the train depot, after which Depot Pond was named, was long gone. Gibson Cottages are located behind the windmill and next to the library.

These pages contain some of my favorite photos of my favorite places in Eastham. I hope you enjoy them. If have other photos that you would like me to include or share, please contact me at nate@nategibson.net.
There are many other wonderful things and places in Eastham – Fort Hill, Captain Penniman’s house, Doane rock to name a few, but I must leave these to others. Eastham Historical Society does an amazing job of recording Eastham’s history.

The driveway to Gibson Cottages is just behind the windmill. Built in Plymouth sometime before 1700, the mill was shipped across the bay around 1788, then dismantled in 1793 and hauled by oxen to its present spot in Eastham. It’s the oldest working grist mill on Cape Cod. See photos of Eastham’s Windmill, from 1890 to the present.

My parents purchased Homer Smith’s Cottages and they became Gibson Cottages. Gibson Cottages are located at 80 Depot Road, on Depot Pond, near the center of Eastham, and next to the Eastham Library.

Eastham Depot see also the terrific exhibit at the Schoolhouse Museum.

First Encounter Beach has the best sunsets.

Depot Pond is near the center of Eastham next to the Eastham Library.
